On these beautiful grounds lie the remains of the mentally ill, impaired and poor who spent their last earthly days here

Documents held at Badger Prairie list hundreds of people buried in unmarked graves on the grounds from the mid-1800s to the early 1900s. Some of the remains have been moved to other cemeteries

It was a common practice in that era to bury patients on the grounds if they died in a mental hospital, and due to the negative stigma associated with mental illness, most were buried without tombstones to protect family confidentiality.
