9 year old James Caravello died at St. Mary's Hospital on September 13, 1932 from an infection due to injuries suffered on September 3.
He climed onto a tree and dangled his leg into the polar bear cage at Vilas Zoo.
A polar bear got ahold of his leg and ripped flesh from the leg and clawed his back.
James had been ordered away only a few minutes before.
Women fainted as rescuers beat the bear away with sticks and stones hurled through the cage bars
