Lake Mendota Bog
Summer 1993 – Madison, WI
The 1 1/2-acre bog began its merry journey on Lake Mendota earlier in the summer when high lake
levels ripped it from near the north end of the Yahara River. From there it drifted to Governor's
Island, Picnic Point and the Union Terrace.
Three power boats going full bore were used to push the green glacier to University Bay. It was
ripped to shreds, 50 to 60 truckloads of it - rich in peat moss - were hauled to the campus where
Agriculture Services used it for compost.
