Car Jumps Yahara River One Dies
July 30, 2004 Madison, WI
A late-night Beer Run shortly after 11 p.m. to Vic Pierce Liquor led To Death. Daniel Stowell was driving back on Sherman Avenue, and going at least 60 mph, tried to go around some cars and hit a traffic island just north of the Yahara River bridge. Stowell lost control of the car and went off the street, crashing through a chain link fence in place to keep people from going over the edge of the canal at the Tenney Park Locks and went airborne (approximately ?? ft). The car landed on its roof on top of a concrete wall that separates the boat channel into two lanes like a street, then plunged into the far side of the boat channel and submerged.

The driver freed himself from the wreck and found the passenger floating in the channel. He pulled him to shore and tried CPR, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. He died of "major blunt force trauma to the head and chest," and did not drown. The driver has had numerous traffic offenses and three arrest warrants charging him with driving after his license was revoked.

The two were at a party and didn't know each other before that night. The driver tried to claim the other man was driving but an in-store security tape showed otherwise. He was sentenced to two years in jail and 20 years of probation. His blood alcohol level was .07

Pleaded no contest Wednesday to homicide by drunken driving and obstructing police. Dane County Jail for up to two years, will also spend the next 20 years on probation
