Deputy locked in Tunnel Under Courthouse Overnight
2008 – Madison, WI
A Dane County deputy was inadvertently locked overnight in an underground tunnel
beneath the Dane County Courthouse.
Deputy Dave Hafeman's 14-hour ordeal started Friday at about 3:30 p.m., when he
entered a small passageway leading to the tunnel guards use to ferry jail inmates
between the Public Safety Building and the court house. Unfortunately, when he went
into the approximately 8-foot-by-8-foot sally port, the guard who controlled the
heavy metal doors on each side of the port had gone home for the weekend..
Hafeman, a 14-year veteran of the department, was not discovered until his wife,
alarmed that he never came home from work, called the Madison Police Department,
which alerted Dane County authorities. Dane County detectives then found Hafeman's
car in the Dane County Parking Ramp, then traced him back to the tunnel.
Hafeman fired shots trying to get out.
