Madison Fire Department Strike
March 1969 – Madison, WI
After the City Common Council voted against parity between firefighter and police pay the
firefighters union Local 311 went on strike. This was the first Madison municipal group to go
out on strike. Administrators tried to continue operating the fire department. On March 28,
schools were cancelled due to the strike.
On March 30, two days after the strike began, an agreement was reached and firefighters returned
to stations. Sparring between the MFD Administration, the Police and Fire Commission, and the
City Council remained in the headlines for nearly two years.
