  • [1] In the 1855 election, MacArthur was elected lieutenant governor. William A. Barstow was declared winner of governor's race in a contested election against Coles Bashford; however, Barstow resigned amist fraud allegations on March 21, 1856. MacArthur then became acting governor but stepped aside four days later after the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled Bashford governor.
  • [2]In the 1861 election, Salomon was elected lieutenant governor. When Louis P. Harvey died in office, Salomon became acting governor.
  • [3]On January 1, 1906, Robert M. La Follette resigned to join the U.S. Senate. Lieutenant Governor Davidson became acting governor. He was later elected governor for subsequent terms.
  • [4]In the 1942 election, Orland Steen Loomis defeated the incumbent Julius P. Heil; however, Loomis died before taking office. Per a ruling by the Wisconsin Supreme Court, Lieutenant Governor Goodland was elevated to acting governor. He was later elected governor in 1944.
  • [5]On March 12, 1947, Walter Samuel Goodland died in office, making Lieutenant Governor Rennebohn acting governor. He was later elected governor in 1948.
  • [6]On July 6, 1977, Patrick Lucey resigned to become U.S. Ambassador to Mexico. Lieutenant Governor Schreiber then became acting governor.
  • [7]In 2001, Tommy Thompson resigned his position as governor to become U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services. Lieutenant Governor McCallum served as governor for the remainder of Thompson's term before being defeated by Jim Doyle in the 2002 gubernatorial election.
